My Pursuit of the Perfect Shave
Why a Classic Straight
Razor Shave Still Matters
Most men don’t enjoy their morning shave. It’s something to rush through—like brushing your teeth—so you can get on with the day. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
Generations ago, fathers and barbers taught men how to shave properly—with patience, heat, and quality tools. It was a ritual, not a chore. Today, most of us use disposable razors and canned foams that leave skin dry and irritated. We’ve traded ritual for speed.
At my chair in Sonoma Barber & Shave Co., I bring that ritual back. I use time-tested tools and premium products to show men what a real shave feels like—smooth, relaxing, and restorative. You’ll not only leave with the best shave of your life, but also with the knowledge to make your home shave better than ever.
The Four Elements of a Perfect Shave
Preparation & Products – Heat and moisture are everything. A steaming towel opens pores and softens hair so quality, glycerin-based shave cream can do its job. Think cutting cooked spaghetti instead of hard spaghetti—it’s smoother, easier, and cleaner.
Tool & Technique – A single-edge razor and short, gentle strokes with the grain prevent irritation. Rinse the blade often and let the sharpness—not pressure—do the work.
Education – During your visit, I explain how to adapt what you feel in the shop to your own morning routine. Small adjustments make a huge difference in comfort.
In my experience, every perfect shave relies on four elements: Preparation, Products, Tool, and Technique.
What to Expect in the Chair
Relax & Recline – Kick back and let the process begin.
Steam & Pre-Shave – A hot towel opens pores; a layer of Proraso Pre-Shave Cream preps and protects.
Lather & First Pass – Warm lather softens hair. I shave with the grain first to remove the bulk.
Second Pass – Fresh lather and a clean blade go across the grain for that glass-smooth finish—never against it.
Cold Towel Finish – A chilled towel infused with lavender, tea tree, and lemon calms and refreshes.
Aftercare – I finish with Proraso Soothing Aftershave Balm, leaving skin hydrated and healthy.
Every shave in my shop follows a simple ritual—designed for your skin, your comfort, and your peace of mind.
Our shave isn’t just about removing hair—it’s about caring for your skin, easing your mind, and enjoying a timeless ritual.
